Cottonmouth

Large water snake with a spade-shaped head. Edges of mouth are tan. Young snakes are usually banded; older individuals are blotchy black and/or brownish.

Bite is very venomous. When disturbed, it gapes widely and displays the whitish inside of its mouth. Also called water moccasin, it swims with its head out of the water.
