Salamanders

Salamanders are smooth-skinned, tailed creatures that lack claws and ear openings. Some have the ability to regenerate tails or limbs lost to predators. Seldom seen, they live in dark, moist habitats and are nocturnal and secretive. They are most active in the spring and fall, especially near the pools where they breed. Fertilization in most is internal but is not accomplished by copulation. During mating, the male releases a small packet of sperm which the female brushes against and draws into her body. The packet is kept in her body until she ovulates, which may be months later. Most species lay their eggs in water. Both adults and larvae are carnivorous and feed on worms and insects and other invertebrates.
